A Memorable Mother’s Day Gift!!!

The Whispers take the stage at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 8pm. Joining them on the bill, is a very special appearance by Valerie Simpson with a Tribute to Nick Ashford.

It’s a Mother’s Day gift mom is sure to remember (and you will too!)

THE WHISPERS

A veteran R&B quintet with an impressive legacy of hits, The Whispers celebrate more than four decades of beautiful, enduring music. As one of R&B music’s most beloved and consistently popular vocal groups, they began their legendary and timeless career in 1963, producing a string of hits over the last four decades. The group emerged as the leading romantic singers of their generation, racking up one gold album after another and charting numerous R&B hits.

Arguably the most celebrated R&B balladeers of their generation, The Whispers still make women swoon with their silky yet forceful tenors of twins Walter and Scotty. In the new millennium The Whispers still perform around the world to thousands of loyal fans. They have not made any personnel changes and the group still consists of Walter Scott, Wallace Scott, Nicholas Caldwell, and Leaveil Degree. The Whispers are one of only a few “old school” groups that can boast of having over 40 years in the industry with a worldwide fan base, maintaining their vocal dominance and original members. Their music has been heard on movie sound tracks such as “Waiting to Exhale” and “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” and they sang the title track on Jay Leno’s movie soundtrack “Collision Course”.

Over 40 years of R & B and pop favorites later, spanning more than 3 dozen albums, the group has achieved numerous honors and distinctions.

Highlights:

7 Gold Albums
2 Platinum Albums
12 Top Twenty Singles
40 Charted Hits Since 1970
Grammy Award Nominees
American Music Award Nominees
Soul Train Award Nominees

VALERIE SIMPSON

A driving force in songwriting with her late husband Nick Ashford, Valerie Simpson has a rich history of penning hits for an array of notable artists.

Teamed with Nick, she co-wrote several soul hits before the duo began their own successful performing career in the early 1970s. Ashford & Simpson wrote for performers including Chuck Jackson and Ray Charles before joining Motown’s production staff where they created hits for many of the label’s top acts, among them “You’re All I Need to Get By” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Diana Ross, “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan, and “Let’s Go Get Stoned” by Ray Charles, to note a few.

The performing pair scored a first soul hit of their own in 1973 and amassed a solid string of smash hits including “Don’t Cost You Nothing” (1978), “Found a Cure” (1979), “Street Corner” (1982), and 1984’s “Solid,” Ashford & Simpson’s first R&B chart-topper.

The charismatic Ashford & Simpson were also heard on air at 98.7 KISS FM for several years as radio personalities on the New York airwaves.

After Nick’s passing last August, we are honored to have Valerie Simpson join us for this very special Mother’s Day show.
